Ngā Tohu Ārahi, our API Centre data handling guidelines, help organisations to be aware of ethical data handling, especially concerning the protection and safeguarding of customer data.

Our data guidelines were developed alongside key industry stakeholders and our API Centre working groups, guided by Māori data scientists and data experts and grounded in Māori data governance principles.

They provide a best practice foundation and universal framework for our Standards Users, and anyone interested in ethical data handling.

How they work

Our guidelines are split into eight different pou (pillars) that can be used to guide safe and responsible data handling practises. The pou closely align with the Māori Data Governance Model, which was developed by Te Kāhui Raraunga. We explain the principles, terms and concepts informing this document, and address six key areas of data handling relevant in our context:

  • Data Collection
  • Data Protection
  • Access and Sharing
  • Data Usage
  • Data Retention and Disposal
  • Data Quality and System Integrity

Our guidelines are non-binding, in recognition that our Standards Users and other organisations may have internal data handling practises that differ from this document. However, the guidelines can be used as a framework to help achieve organisational goals, particularly in delivering best practice data governance and Te Ao Māori strategies.
